Rugby 15s

In Rugby 15s, players are introduced to the full game of Rugby, the core of the sport.

The traditional form of the game, Rugby 15s is played with 15 players on the field with eight substitutes.

Usually played in winter, this format allows for players to try out all the different positions in the sport and learn the different skills required all over the field.

  • What is 15-a-side?

    15-a-side rugby is the most well-known version of tackle rugby often played in the winter season 15-a-side refers to 15 players on each team on the field at once, eight forwards and seven backs. 

     

  • Who is 15-a-side for?

    15-a-side is a game for all, there are several positions suited to different skills. Whether you’re fast, powerful, tall, agile, 15-a-side rugby has a position for you. 15-a-side rugby is suited to those who wish to play a contact version of rugby. 

     

  • How to learn?

    Depending on age,  join a club or a school team and come learn the basics of rugby. You will be taught catch/pass, tackle, kicking, and how to play. The best thing about women and girls rugby is there are new girls joining all the time so you likely won’t be the only new player. 

     

  • How to play?

    You can play in clubs and schools depending on what your union offers. 15-a-side tends to be a more competitive format so look out for development grades or grades using modified formats like 10s which have less players. 

     

  • When is 15s offered?

    March through to October.

     

  • What is the commitment level for Rugby 15s?

    Medium - High. 

    Most teams train 1-2 nights per week and play 1x per week. Season length varies in each Union but can be between six or up to 15 weeks. See your local Provincial Union for more information.
