Sarah Hirini returns to lead the Black Ferns Sevens at their first home HSBC World Series tournament in Hamilton next week.
Co-coaches Allan Bunting and Cory Sweeney have named the squad that will look to claim a maiden title on home soil.
The squad is;
Michaela Blyde
Gayle Broughton
Kelly Brazier
Theresa Fitzpatrick
Stacey Fluhler (nee Waaka)
Sarah Hirini
Tyla Nathan-Wong
Mahina Paul
Risaleeana Pouri-Lane
Alena Saili
Ruby Tui
Niall Williams
Tenika Willison
Both Sarah Hirini and Michaela Blyde return from injuries which saw them miss the victories in Dubai and Cape Town, bolstering an already strong team.
“It’s great to have them both back involved. We were able to build depth up in Cape Town but with this being a home tournament, its special for them to be playing and good for us to build that core of our team in what is a big year,” said Bunting.
After debuting in Cape Town, 18-year-old Mahina Paul has impressed to retain her position in the playing squad.
“Mahina had some opportunities in Cape Town and made the most of them. She’s an exciting young player, she brings energy and has trained really well. We’re looking forward to seeing her get another chance in the black jersey.”
The prospect of playing in front of a home crowd for the first time on the World Series has everyone excited.
“I’ve been in this set up for nine years, last year we had a mini tournament in Hamilton which was pretty special but to have our first home tournament its huge. Knowing that our families will be in the crowd and everyone is behind us means a lot to this group and we want to make sure we perform .”
The Black Ferns Sevens will travel to Hamilton on Sunday evening in preparation for the HSBC Hamilton Sevens.
