A massive year for Under 85kg rugby will culminate at Eden Park, with the National Club Cup Final confirmed as the curtain-raiser for the Bledisloe Cup match on 27 September.
Club competitions are getting underway across the country while registrations for the National Club Cup open today.
The first ever New Zealand Under 85kg team will depart for Sri Lanka at the end of this month for their two-match tour, cementing the continued growth of the grade.
The Club Cup competition attracted 45 teams in 2024 and resulted in a thrilling Final in Wellington where Auckland club champions, the Pakuranga Black Panthers, beat defending champions High School Old Boys Light Bears.
New Zealand Rugby's Head of Participation Mike Hester the competition continues to be a highlight on the community rugby calendar.
“Last year’s final was a perfect advertisement for the Under 85kg grade, fast, physical, exciting rugby; we expect more of the same this year.
“The inaugural final was held at Eden Park, so it is great to return there, and play the match before what will be an epic Bledisloe Cup Test,” said Hester.
The Under 85kg National Club Cup will see its sixth year in action and will kick off on 19 July. Teams will play in regional play off fixtures before advancing through to quarter finals.
