Women in Governance

It is widely accepted that diversity around the board table brings a breadth of perspective and experiences that results in better decision-making by boards and creates stronger, more sustainable organisations. 

Diverse boards also play an important role in increasing the visibility and profile of underrepresented or traditionally disadvantaged groups. Board members are role models and leaders, and diverse boards demonstrate to all people that they can participate in and lead the way within their chosen fields.

NZR’s Commitments

NZR’s Board Diversity Action Plan outlines our commitment to maintaining 50% overall diversity on the board, with a minimum of 40% women. 

NZR is also a member of the Global Women Champions for Change network, and through this, maintains a commitment to achieving at least 40% women on its board. 

Additionally, the Women and Girls System Strategy, launched in March 2023, set a long-term target of 40% female representation by 2033. The W&G Action Plan 2024 includes approaches to achieve greater female board, senior leadership, and committee representation.

Work Underway

NZR has undertaken several initiatives to support system-wide progress towards greater board diversity in rugby. Most recently this has included: 

• A Women in Rugby Governance and Mentoring programme with the Institute of Directors.

• A networking group for Women in Rugby Governance.

• Training resources for governance skills and mitigating unconscious bias.

• Te Rito Bicultural competency training to develop Te Ao Māori cultural knowledge and understanding.
