Ako Wāhine

The Ako Wāhine programme is a coaching course specifically designed for women who are new to coaching, in their first year of coaching, or looking to upskill at a foundational level. No previous coaching experience is required. The content is based on World Rugby and New Zealand Rugby’s Foundation Level 1.

The Ako Wāhine experience provides a strong emphasis on creating an inclusive and supportive environment where women can grow as coaches, gain new skills and knowledge, and connect with other women coaches in the community.

We know that an environment tailored specifically to women makes a big difference to the learning, connection and development outcomes, and with more and more women stepping up to become future leaders of the sport, Ako Wāhine is setting a benchmark of how things can be done. The goal of Ako Wāhine is to build a network of confident women who have strengthened their capabilities within rugby both professionally and personally.  The programme is the brainchild of former Black Fern and New Zealand Rugby Women’s and Girl's Rugby Manager Vania Wolfgramm and has been run around the country since its inception in 2019, with alumna going on to feature as facilitators for future sessions. Workshops have been run in the Northern, Central and Southern regions.

A childminding service is provided at each workshop.

The course includes three modules:

  • Module 1 – Game Knowledge

  • Module 2 – Coaching skills

  • Module 3 – How to run an effective training

As a bonus, by completing the course, you will become a NZ Rugby and World Rugby accredited Level 1 coach.
